The Beginnings of Orangeries
The addition of conservatories or
Orangeries to any home is a great way to provide extra
living space, whilst enhancing the beauty and value
of that home. One of the best product choices on the market
today would be to choose
Hardwood Conservatories or
Hardwood Orangeries. The reason for this is the shear
Quality of the overall finish which is far superior to other
materials.
Orangeries and their History
The history of Conservatories,
Orangeries and Garden rooms came from the love of plants and
the fact that they brought the garden into the home.
Although a great deal of greenery is used to furnish
conservatories in our modern day living, this extra space is
used more as a relaxing environment and offers a comfortable
all year round living space.
Reasons that Orangeries became popular
Orangeries first became popular in the
1700s when citrus plants like Orange and lemon trees were
introduced for the gardens of the Nobility and the
Aristocracy.
The climate these plants required to live in, in
order to flourish, needed to be addressed. At first
buildings of this nature were expensive to construct, and
required a large open space, therefore orangeries were
available only to the very wealthy.
Architectural designes for Orangeries
These Orangeries often featured large
columns made from stone, and a solid back wall. The front
and sides had a huge glass double door more often than not
with a semi circular window above. The rest would have been
made up of floor to ceiling windows, in keeping with the
original architecture. Internally there were plastered
walls, cornices and pilasters. During the summer months
whilst the plants were enjoying the warmer weather the
orangery would be used for entertaining and summer balls.
But during the winter this is when the Orangeries were used
as they were intended, for the protection of all those
delicate varieties of plants that would mainly be Orange
trees, this is why the term Orangeries came into being
Popular Orangeries
The popularity of
conservatories and Orangeries was extensive during
Victorian times; this was due to the advance in heating
techniques, the developments in the cast iron industry and
the availability of cheaper glass due to the abolition of
window tax.
The Victorians developed a love for the
more exotic plants and used this addition to display these
to their full potential. The furnishings inside would
consist of a cast iron table and chairs, a tiled floor with
rugs all easily removed for maintance purposes.
The Edwardians chose to have a simpler
design with wicker furniture and benches much the same as we
have today.
Their simplistic designs and desire for
lightness was matched by their passion for outdoor living.
They considered gardens to be an extension of their home and
conservatories were the point where their homes and gardens
merged.
To maintain the harmony of home and
garden the windows were purposely made extremely wide, to
give maximum light and not obstruct the view to the garden.
Today’s orangeries and conservatories are built with the
same ideas in mind. But with far better glass manufacturing
they can truly become a room for all seasons.
